Around noon the next day, Dad calls again. I stand within arm’s reach of the phone, smoldering at the sound of his voice as he leaves a voice mail reiterating his vacation plans, as if anyone in this house wants to see him.

I’m tempted to cut his message short until he says, “Lulu, let’s get together for your birthday. Kath would love to see a Broadway show with you. She also has a coupon for a spa in Tribeca. You two can have a girl’s day. Think about it. Miss you, bye.”

I delete the message as soon as it’s done recording.

Nothing he said sounded sincere. Is the spa supposed to be a birthday present or a matter of convenience since Katherine has a coupon? Does Dad actually want to celebrate my birthday? He forgot the last two, what makes this one special? Turning eighteen is a milestone, but so is graduating high school, and Dad couldn’t bother to attend the ceremony. And nowhere in his message did he mention wanting to do anything with me.
